The creature from the black lagoon has appeared in at least one novel and several films, the first appearing in 1954. This androgynous character is described in the movie as a descendant of prehistoric creatures and in the novel as an extraterrestrial. The creature's film role portrays him as having more of a male than a female persona as he kills several of his would be male captors, managing to capture and take the beautiful Kay with him to his underground lair before he is confronted and killed.
